CROSS COUNTRY UPDATE
There have been two races in the Sport Direct XC league in January; Sunday 8th at Golden Acre and Sunday 28th on Otley Chevin.

There was a big turn out at Golden Acre and a good Kirkstall turn out too. The men’s team pretty much matched their score from the 1st race in Dewsbury and the women’s team faired slightly worse. Unfortunately this meant that both teams finished 6th (out of 6) in their respective Premier Divisions. After the Race 2 the men’s team were 6th (bottom) of the league and the women’s team were 5th.

At the time of writing I’ve no details of the Otley Chevin result.

A special mention goes to Peter Branney who won the race outright at Golden Acre.

After solid performances in the first two cross country races Jonathon Gidlow is 2nd in his age category so far, so let’s hope Jonathon keeps up the good work.

There are two races left in the league; Sunday 18th Feb at Bramley Fall Park and Sunday 4th March at Idle.

Registration for the Bramley Fall race is down Newlay Lane by the side of the football field - off Leeds & Bradford Rd. Horsforth Harriers are organising this race, but Kirkstall are providing the showers and food at the Kirkstall Leisure Centre afterwards. Because we don't know how many will be coming back, we have to assume it could be between 50 and 100. We ask as many members as possible contribute towards the food, sandwiches, quiches salads and pastas, plus sweetstuff. They will be reimbursed any costs, and receipts will be appreciated. If you have any special talents on the food scene, please let Carol know, otherwise she will be co-ordinating everyone so we all don't bring dripping sarnies. If you bring the food to the Leisure Centre for 9.45/10.00 am, we can then start organising tables, and have time to get to the start of the race.

Both races begin at 11am and for those wanting lifts and directions meet at the LPSA at 0945 prompt.

AIRE VALLEY CHALLENGE
This 6 mile off road  race around Bramley Fall Woods was held on 14-Feb. Yet again a superb performance by Peter Branney who, following his victory in the Golden Acre XC won this event too.

Also doing the club proud in the same race was Stuart Reardon and Tim Foreman in 27th and 36th place respectively

BRASS MONKEY
A dozen or so Kirkstall Harriers ran the Brass Monkey half marathon on 21st Jan.

Well done all, but a special mention to Helen Goldthorpe who got a PB in a time of 1.49.30ish.

If anyone else achieved a pb, or knows of any members doing well, please let the club know by telling Peter Hey, Paul Luxton, Richard Thomas or Carol Moran

YORKSHIRE VETS SERIES
The first race of 10 is on 4th Feb, from Hall Park Horsforth - START TIME 10.00 am. For all you old buggers over 35, try to support these races, as they are a club competition mainly, but individual prizes are available for each race and over the best 6 races. They are about 6 miles in distance, and are generally on and off road over pleasant courses, with that "friendly" competitive nature over the full range of abilities for both men and women.

NEW MEMBERS
Please welcome to the club Graham Curtis from Pudsey who has already been a counter in the first cross country race, and Mario Kokes from Lower Wortley, who also seems to have a touch of speed about him.

CURRY NIGHT
We are going to the Sheesh Mahal (sponsors of our 10k road race) on Thursday 1st Feb - tables booked for 7.30. If you are coming and not given your name to Peter Hey, please let him know asap, so he can organise the correct number.

AGM
Watch out for news of this year’s AGM. A date hasn’t been fixed yet, but it is likely to be sometime towards the end of Feb / early March. We’ll let you know as soon as we can. Please do try and attend. Last year we had less than 10 members in attendance, which was disappointing as it’s your opportunity to have a say in your running club.

DUBLIN MARATHON
A bit of a way off yet, but Paul Luxton is thinking of running the Dublin Marathon and is wondering if anyone from the club is also interested. The club organised a trip in 2003 with about 12 people going over and it was a great trip. The race is on Monday 29th October (it’s a bank holiday in Ireland).

If anyone is interested – or think they might be interested – let Paul know.

There’s no rush as race entries don’t fill up (although entries are cheaper before August 1st) and the flights aren’t available to be booked yet, but the earlier we book when they are available the cheaper they will be.

FEBRUARY RACES

Sunday 4th February – Dewsbury 10k
Sunday 11th February – Liversedge 1/2M
Sunday 18th February – Sport Direct XC League, Bramley Fall Park – Please try to attend this one
Sunday 25th February – Huddersfield 10k

Please check www.runnersworld.co.uk for entry details

A MESSAGE FROM MIKE AND JANE TOMLINSON

All,

I wanted to send an e-mail to as many running clubs as we could to advise of a new mass participation run before the media announced.

Many of you will have previously helped Jane to raise money over the last 5 years, the support we've received from fellow runners has been inspiring. Jane has been unable to train since we came back from America and her event days are over. We knew the Ride Across America would be the last event but likewise we were sure that we wanted to continue fund-raising.

So for nearly two years we’ve been trying to set up a major mass participation event – the biggest in Yorkshire . The Leeds 10k will be announced tomorrow, all the details are on the website www.runforall.com. The run takes in all the iconic landmarks of Leeds and in the inaugural year has a limit of 10,000.

All profits from the run are going to Charity and runners can either just enjoy the run or choose to help any cause of their choice.

We have in establishing the run tried to avoid dates of local runs but have also needed to fit into the Councils event diary. We have also tried to avoid any routes already used.

It is an exciting event and we hope it will be a have fantastic carnival atmosphere. We will send leaflets out but don't know how quickly the race will fill.

If anyone has any questions please can you e-mail Graeme and we will try and answer the best we can.

Thank you, we hope we have all your blessings and support.

Yours Sincerely

Mike & Jane Tomlinson
