JUNE RACES

EDINBURGH MARATHON NEWS
Excellent news from HELEN GOLDTHORPE who ran the Edinburgh Marathon on 29-May. She achieved a huge PB with a time of 3h52m11s knocking an hour off of her previous best marathon time.

A huge improvement and good to see the Kirkstall effect kicking in.

Well done.

FURTHER CONGRATULATIONS
Well done to the following on collecting prizes
GRAHAM CURTIS - 3rd over 45 vet in the Yorkshire Vets Fell Running Championship at Meltham

GEMMA SMITH, MANDY STEVENS AND SHEILA KING, for picking up the 1st Ladies team prize at the Leeds 1/2 Marathon.

PBs
Among this month’s PBs are
PATRICK NESDEN
In the middle of running 4 races within 2 weeks with 10ks at Rothwell & Askern as well as the Leeds and Sheffield 1/2Ms, Patrick has improved his PB for both distance, with a 10k PB of 52m16s and a 1/2M PB of 1h55m59s.

A great achievement Patrick.

SHEILA KING ran a 1/2M PB at Leeds with a time of 1h43m58s.
The training from London is still paying off it seems.

GEMMA SMITH also ran a PB at Leeds 1/2M with an excellent time of 1h33m48s.
A sub 1h30 on a flatter course on the cards.

SARAH BREWER ran another 1/2M PB, this time at Chester with a time of 1h40.
This was a debut 1/2M too, so extra well done.

HELEN GOLDTHORPE in the build up to Edinburgh ran a 10k PB at the Pulse 10k with a time of 47m08s

If you have done a PB and would like it mentioned please pass on your details to one of the Committee

CURRY
We are having a curry at the Sheesh Mahal on Thursday June 7th, meal at 7.30pm. Please let Peter Hey know if you are going, or if you put your name down and cannot make it so we can have a fairly accurate number of bums on seats.

NEW MEMBERS
Its nice to know that as well as continuing to pick up new members - some of them are coming from other clubs - we must be doing something right - or are we all just a nice bunch of people - or could it be the cheap drinks at the LPSA
GEMMA LOUISE SMITH - ex Leeds City, and living in Burley, she has finally paid her dues to become an official member, just in time for her PB at Leeds.
STEPHEN BLADES, ex Horsforth, lives just round the corner, but has spent more time in the LPSA then on our training runs, but what’s wrong with that!
CHRIS LUCKETT, from the Burley Woods area, who has just started with the club, so hopefully we will get some gossip on him soon.

YORKS VETS
Well done to the 5 men who ran at Meanwood, which only kept us in the same positions as previous (provisionally) -13th & 12th position respectively in the league out of 29 teams. And a special mention to CHRIS GLOVER, the only Kirkstall runner at the previous race at Meltham who kept us up there with 172 points.

The next events for June are SUN 3rd WALTON near Wakefield, and WED 20th from Pudsey Leisure Centre, but both starts are usually over a mile away so don't be late. Full details on the yvaa.org website or from Peter Hey

The next race in this series is at Meanwood, from Old Leos rugby club and will take in bits of the Meanwood Valley Trail on Tuesday 22nd May, the race starting at 7.30. Hopefully there should be few excuses for not getting a good turnout and everyone scoring points for the club. Entry is £2.50 for Vets, and non Vets can run as guests too for a slightly higher fee.

LEEDS COUNTRY WAY
We are hoping this is going to be on Sunday 2nd September, so those who want to run a leg - between 9 and 12 miles  mainly off road but decent tracks and paths, please put your name forward now to Martin Savage or Collette Spencer or any member of the committee, and if you have a preference for a leg, please mention this as well. It will involve running with a partner of similar ability, and your leg would need reccing before race day.

We will hopefully be organising recci runs in July and August so watch this space, but in the main members will need to organise their own recci runs and where the club can help out we will.

10K T-SHIRT DESIGN
If you are feeling creative or are a bit of an artist at heart (and not the p*** artist type), we are looking for a T-Shirt design for our 10k road race. If you can come up with something by the end of June this would be appreciated. If we do not use it this year, there will also be others in the years to come - hopefully.

TRAINING RUNS FOR JUNE
We are hoping to do the Calverley half marathon route on Wed 6th June 6.30 and 7.00 starts - along with the usual training run distance, and on Monday 18th starting from Golden Acre Park for 7, 9 or 11 mile runs again starting at 7.00 - if you are needing a lift to the start please ask around.

SUBS REMINDER
For hose that haven’t paid please can you forward your subscription monies (£14 for men and £12 for ladies) to Tony Downham, Peter Hey, Richard Thomas or Carol Moran.

KIRKSTALL ABBEY 10K
Not much more to add from last month apart from a reminder to keep the 23rd September 2007 free as it’s looking more likely that this will be the date of our annual race.

WASHBURN VALLEY RELAY
Anyone interested in taking part in this race for the club on Friday 20-Jul-07, please give your names to the committee members. We need 4 people per team, and each of the 4 legs is about 3 miles that goes round either Fewston or Swinsty reservoir, with the fifth and final leg, normally in the Spite pub in Otley to celebrate.

JANE TOMLINSON RACE UPDATE - 24th JUNE 2007
As mentioned last month, Kirkstall Harriers have been asked to provide volunteers for marshalling on the day. If you are able to help out, please pass your details onto Richard Thomas. Please contact Richard direct on RichardT@mitchellandurwin.com

DUBLIN MARATHON – Monday 29th October 2007
A message from Paul Luxton
Some bad news I’m afraid. Due to ongoing back problems I’ve had to concede that it’s extremely unlikely that I’ll be in a position to run the Dublin Marathon. As such it’s also unlikely I’ll be organising a trip. This is come as a big disappointment to me both in terms of my injury and also as I was looking forward to organising a trip.

I’m sorry to anyone who was planning on coming, however if anyone wants any help with booking flights on-line please get in touch. For information it’s still not possible to book return flights on the Tuesday after the race yet, although as last month you can book one way flights from Leeds Bradford to Dublin for a mere £40 incl. taxes one way on the Saturday.

If anyone wants an entry form let me know on pauljluxton@yahoo.co.uk
